Photographic Work

I have been experienced in photography work for over 7 years, and it is primarily what inspired me to peruse design work. I started out primarily self-taught, but I took classes in photography for 3 years in High School, and continued to pursue it as an elective into Post-Secondary years and as a hobby. I have experience primarily in landscape photography, though I also have experience in capturing single subjects in studio lighting and with staging, and capturing portraits and people as a subject, both in a candid manner and a posed, deliberate manner.

The triptych surrounding this text is from a large series of winter photography, taken on the first snowfall of the season in November of 2025. I was able to capture a variety of shots showing the clash between the bright colours of spring, and the dim, dismal greys and blues of the approaching winter.

As mentioned above, I have also been experienced in setting up lighting and doing photography in a studio. A lot of the work I made using studio equipment was produced for photography classes in High School, though I believe it is a good reflection of the skills I have learned as I pursued photography as a hobby. The shots pictured also make use of macro lenses and for three of them, studio backdrops to create stark white or perfectly black backgrounds. In the three studio shots pictured, I also used multiple light sources or reflectors to bounce light to get the images I wanted. This technique of bouncing light was most noticeable for the picture of the tulip, where I was able to get a fuzzy glow in some places, giving the images a spacey quality.

Audio Work

I have been doing audio work since about 2020, primarily as a personal hobby. I have been taking piano lessons since about 2017, and I have made use of this in my audio work since 2022. Primarily, there are two streams to my work. One is based on editing various samples of existing music, and the other is strictly self-composed music. Typically, I tend to combine the two streams in my more recent work. A lot of my work also makes use of natural sounds and textures, and self-produced field recordings. This usually produces a unique mix of the organic and the inorganic. A good example of this at work is the track embedded below.

This track embodies the natural world, and the sound of birds and crickets. It is meant to represent the motif of fireflies in a story, and how they can be seen as an omen of hope, as well as an omen for uncertainty and drastic change.

Who is Zachary Eledin?

This is all my own music, even though my name is not Zachary Eledin. Since I started releasing music digitally, I have been using one of two pseudonyms. The title ‘Zachary Eledin’ is the pseudonym I use for my original music. The name is a rather arbitrary one I created for a 2022 release. I was seventeen at the time, so I was weary about using my real name for publishing music, so I came up with a false name to use for public release.

This name became rather important to me as it represented a character, almost like an alter ego. I have continued to use this name for releasing my own music, including as I started to move to distributing to streaming services since late 2023. For more recent releases, I have started to include my own name in track credits so it’s not completely divorced from my own identify, though I continue to use this name as it has its own significance.

Video Work

As well as my design and photographic work, I have also indulged in video work. Quite a bit of this work involves filmography and self-recorded video being mixed in with digitally created assets or photographs, though I have also produced some small works of animation, such as stop motion (as seen in the video below). As well as this, I am also experienced in creating video edits using a variety of techniques to create surreal and strange scenes, mixing digital assets with videos, almost like a collage. I have also started to delve into producing works of motion design, such as hand-drawn animation and work with kinetic type.

The first video work shown here is a stop-motion animation produced for a Motion Design class. It features a series of CDs that I own dancing around and interacting with one another. It also depicts my hand interacting with the cases occasionally, emphasizing the form of the case and bringing things into the third dimension. I wanted to try and capture the feeling of interacting with and playing physical media, which is why I included the hand, and the CDs interacting.

The song used is Fotzepolitic by Cocteau Twins.

The second video work shown here is a more abstract film work, consisting mainly of a collage of visual elements, mixed in with sound and music. This work was also produced for a university class, but the aim of the project was very open ended, as the prompt was simply to create a compelling video that used multiple elements, with the aim to be projected over an actor during a performance. I decided to pull on one of my own narratives that I had been building, and I used a mix of photographic and illustrated elements to tell the story. Much of it is told through direct narration, supported by the use of various songs and edited photos to create an immersive feeling. Initially, the aim was to have arms and a faint outline of a face visible to show that the narrator was looking at their reflection in a window at night, but this did not fit the parameters of the assignment as it would be a redundant element in the projection.

All of the music, sound, and visuals are self produced, with the exception of a stomping sound which I sourced from Freesound.org.
